Benjamin J. Altheimer Sr., who was born in Pine Bluff (Jefferson County) of German Jewish immigrant parents and who became a lawyer and philanthropist, died in Chicago, Illinois. He is buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Pine Bluff. After moving to Chicago, Altheimer had maintained personal and business connections in Jefferson County and had continued as a benefactor of the city of Altheimer, which he and his brothers had founded. Residents and students continue to benefit from the support of the Ben J. Altheimer Foundation. Among the many recipients of Altheimer’s generosity and far-sightedness are the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville (Washington County), for which he established endowed chairs for agricultural research; the Benjamin J. Altheimer Law Library in Pine Bluff; and the William H. Bowen School of Law in Little Rock (Pulaski County), for which he provided the courtroom.
