Prominent citizens of Harrison (Boone County) formed the Harrison Protective League to combat disruption caused by striking union railroad workers, who were disgruntled over wage cuts announced in February. Violence, perhaps encouraged by members of the Ku Klux Klan, had resulted in sabotage, lynching, personal attacks on non-striking workers, and railway bridge burnings. Disruptions continued for another two years before dissident workers and their families were ultimately driven across the border into Missouri.
