Carrie Nation, the temperance advocate famous for using a hatchet to smash any place that sold alcohol, died at Evergreen Place Hospital in Kansas, where she had been taken after collapsing at the end of her last temperance speech, in Eureka Springs (Carroll County) several months previous. Nation had moved to Eureka Springs during the last years of her life because of its serenity, which reminded her of Scotland, a place she had visited and admired.
