The Engagement at St. Charles took place in Arkansas County. Despite having the “most deadly shot” of the war—in which the Mound City was hit, killing 105 and injuring forty-four—this skirmish is not listed in most books on the Civil War. The sinking of Confederate ships at St. Charles left the White River in control of the Union side for the remainder of the war. It was a Union victory, and a monument to the men who fell at St. Charles stands in the center of town.
