The world’s best 400-meter sprinters met at the Los Angeles Coliseum for the Tenth World Olympiad. It was here that William Arthur Carr, a native of Pine Bluff (Jefferson County), won his semi-final heat with a time of 47.2 seconds, breaking the record. This race was pegged as the “400-meter race of the century.” Carr then broke the record again the next day, August 5, with a time of 46.2 seconds.
