Located along State Highway 355 in southern Hempstead County, the small town of Patmos voted to receive official incorporation. Patmos was created by the construction of the Louisiana Arkansas Railway in 1902 to connect its lumber market with the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railway. The name Patmos comes from the Greek island that serves as the setting for the first chapter of the biblical book of Revelation. At the time of incorporation, Patmos’s businesses included a railroad depot, Baptist church, post office, and several stores. Following the disappearance of the railroads in the 1970s, the town decided to revitalize by building the Patmos Community Park and hosting an annual festival called Mayfest.
