Members of Black Americans for Democracy (BAD), a group of African American students at the University of Arkansas (UA) in Fayetteville (Washington County) that had organized to challenge discriminatory practices on campus, occupied the chairs reserved for musicians at a campus pep rally in order to prevent the band from playing “Dixie,” as had been custom. Later in the year, the band director agreed to stop playing the tune. The group challenged other barriers to Black students at UA. It later became the Black Students Association.
