July 15, 1862

Brigadier General Egbert Brown ordered troops from Cassville, Missouri, to move into Arkansas to destroy enemy units after receiving word that Confederates were amassing near Fayetteville (Washington County). On that early July morning, Federal troops commanded by Major William Miller of the Second Wisconsin Cavalry shelled the Confederate camp and followed with seven cavalry charges. The Confederates fled and were chased for twelve miles until Federal soldiers halted at Cane Hill (Washington County) due to the condition of their horses. The action was a success, allowing Union troops to move seventy-five miles into enemy territory in thirty-six hours.
