While escorting a beef contractor from Pine Bluff (Jefferson County), Lieutenant Thomas Stevenson and the thirty-nine men under his command were fired upon by Confederate forces concealed in a gin house. Stevensons men were quickly deployed, driving enemy forces across the field and capturing a soldier from the Twenty-First Texas Cavalry. One Union soldier was killed during this engagement. The escort returned to Pine Bluff with the cattle.
