Arkansas politician Henderson Madison Jacoway, who represented the state’s Fifth District in the U.S. Congress for six terms, died in Little Rock at the age of seventy-six. Before graduating as valedictorian from Vanderbilt University’s law department in 1898, Jacoway was selected to serve as secretary for the Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes, which was tasked with ending tribal land titles and distributing land among individuals. Jacoway joined Congress in 1910, succeeding his mentor Charles C. Reid, and was known for being a diligent protector of agricultural interests central to the state’s economy.
