George Raymond Hoelzeman was born in Little Rock. After originally pursuing plans to become a Benedictine monk and Roman Catholic priest, he undertook graduate studies in medieval art history and began work as a liturgical artist, eventually achieving national acclaim for his church furniture, statues, and relief woodcarvings, especially those depicting the Stations of the Cross.
