J. William Fulbright was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1944. As a leader of foreign policy in the Senate, Fulbright holds the record as the longest-serving chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, holding that position from 1959 to 1974. In 1974, he lost the position in a surprise defeat to up-and-coming politician Dale Bumpers.
