On May 29, 1958, after struggling through the historic school year, senior Ernest Green became the first African-American student to graduate from Central High School in Little Rock (Pulaski County). Sitting with Green’s family at the graduation ceremony was the virtually unnoticed civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. Green is shown in this photograph standing outside the football stadium, the site of the history-making graduation.
