Approximately forty-five species and subspecies of snakes inhabit Arkansas. Six of these, including the southern copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix), such as the one shown in this photograph, are venomous. The southern copperhead is the most commonly found venomous snake known to inhabit state. Although attention is primarily given to the six venomous species, the majority of snakes in Arkansas are non-venomous and seldom seen.
