The building that became the focal point of the famous Central High School desegregation crisis of 1957 was designed by a team of architects and was completed in 1927 at a cost of $1.5 million. Upon its completion, the American Institute of Architects called it the “most beautiful high school in America.” Known simply as Little Rock High School in the 1920s, the building is shown here while under construction.
