In 1934, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service established one of the first experimental forests in the southern United States, near Crossett (Ashley County). Before its closing on August 9, 1974, the program provided valuable scientific research on a variety of topics ranging from forest ecology to soils. Shown here is the main office of the project in 1938, approximately four years after it opened.
