Though born a slave in Mississippi, Scott Bond would become one of the wealthiest African Americans in Arkansas history. Bond and his family were moved to Cross County, Arkansas, just before the outbreak of the Civil War, eventually settling in Madison (St. Francis County). By the time of his death in 1933, he had been engaged in a number of very profitable business ventures and owned 12,000 acres of farmland.
