Journalist and author Harry Ashmore, a South Carolina native, was hired in 1947 as an editorial writer for the Arkansas Gazette. He quickly became the papers executive editor. Though an accomplished author, he is best known for his acclaimed series of editorials on the 1957 desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock (Pulaski County), for which he won a Pulitzer Prize.
