Five sub-species of wild turkeys inhabit the United States, with the eastern wild turkey the only species to inhabit Arkansas. First named the forest turkey in 1817, it has been known to grow up to four feet tall and fly up to fifty miles an hour for short distances. It is the largest game bird for which hunters can purchase a hunting license in the United States.
