This drawing by noted Civil War artist Alfred Rudolf Waud showing African-American soldiers mustering out at Little Rock (Pulaski County) was published in Harper’s Weekly in May 1866. One regiment of the U.S. Colored Troops was organized in Fort Smith (Sebastian County) in December 1863, and six units of Arkansas Infantry (African Descent) were raised in 1864 and federalized as part of the U.S. Colored Troops.
