The Christ of the Ozarks statue in Eureka Springs (Carroll County) was the first of the Sacred Projects constructed by anti-Semitic minister and controversial political agitator Gerald L. K. Smith. Construction on the seven-story structure began in 1966, two years after Smith moved to the area. Smith proclaimed it better than the work of Michelangelo. However, one art critic described it as a “milk carton with a tennis ball stuffed on top.” The Sacred Projects, including the Christ of the Ozarks, are major tourist attractions in the area.
