Early 1900s timber workers entered the forest, located a suitable tree, cut and trimmed the tree, rough-sawed it into a manageable log, and skidded it out of the woods to the nearest railhead, usually with the aid of a mule team. Apparently, no mules were available for this circa 1910 Union County crew, which was required to remove the log by hand.
