Republican state leaders pose in front of the state headquarters in support of 1916 Republican presidential candidate Charles Evans Hughes. A small poster of Hughes can be seen hanging in the headquarters window. Hughes polled only 48,879 votes out of a total of 170,104 Arkansas votes cast. He finished behind Democratic winner Woodrow Wilson. A Republican candidate for President would not carry Arkansas until the reelection of Richard Nixon in 1972.
