Henry Massie Rector served as Arkansas’s governor at the beginning of the Civil War. “The people of this commonwealth are freemen, not slaves,” he said after the fall of Fort Sumter, “and will defend to the last extremity their honor, lives and property against Northern mendacity and usurpation.” A devout states’ rights advocate, Rector, at one point, considered seceding from the Confederacy.
