A former Indian path that crossed present-day Hempstead and Miller counties in the early 1800s was used extensively by trader and horse smuggler Nicholas Trammell Jr. Named for him, the Trammel Trace was one of the first roads from Arkansas into Texas. It was traveled by many colonists journeying to Texas and, later, by soldiers during the U.S.-Mexican War. There is little evidence remaining of the once-important road, shown here on this map drawn in 1944.
