Pocahontas became the seat of government of Randolph County with the county’s creation in 1835. After the first courthouse collapsed in 1870, a new government building, shown on the right, was constructed. Remaining in use by the county until a WPA courthouse was completed in 1940, and used to house elements of the city government after 1940, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
