Most early 1800s settlements were situated along the nearest streams for trade and transportation. In many cases, such streams were never spanned by a bridge for anything other than foot traffic. Some of those bridges, such as the one spanning the Mulberry River in Johnson County, are still in use in the twenty-first century.
