In 1950, the mineral miserite was named in honor of Benton County native Hugh D. Miser, longtime geologist with the U.S. Geological Commission. The unusual cerium-bearing potassium silicate has been unearthed in Canada and in Garland County, where the specimen shown here was found. It is generally reddish brown or pink with a slightly violet hue.
