During the Civil War, Van H. Manning of Hamburg (Ashley County) helped recruit and organize the 3rd Arkansas Infantry Regiment. The regiment, the only Arkansas unit to serve with General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, was led by Colonel Manning in such battles as Antietam and Gettysburg. Manning, who was wounded for a third time in the 1864 Battle of the Wilderness, was captured and spent the remainder of the war in prison.
