"An announcement was made at the Little Rock Zoo last Friday which points to the civic pride of the residents and businessmen of the greater Little Rock area and the state. Participating in the announcement on the fundraising drives for the giraffe fund were Mr. Mark Block, who coordinated the businessman's collections, Dr. Arthur Haut, who headed the neighborhood door-to-door campaign, Dr. Charles Roberts, coordinator for the Little Rock Civitan Club, and Mr. Raymond Squires, director of the Little Rock Zoo. Mr. Block acted as spokesman."
"All right. Well, gentlemen, realizing that we were nearing our goal, we called a meeting at City Hall tonight of the various committees that have been working on the giraffe fund drive and tabulating everything we had in hand up to this morning. We had a total collected and turned in of $4,665.11. In addition to that, I had from the business community another $212 that I turned in this morning. Dr. Haut's drive in the neighborhoods amounted to $446.87 of additional money to be turned in this morning. And KAAY, from their various boxes and collections, turned in $170. So, when we got all this totaled, we found we had a total of $5,493.98 actually turned into City Hall towards the purchase of $5,500 giraffe. So, you might say we were just inches away from reaching our goal. We contacted the Civitan Club and they, of course, as you well know, had pledged $1,000 towards this campaign. When all these gifts came in, while we realized that we were standing at $6,493.98, almost $1,000 over our goal. Well, this is just great. And this is the money that we have actually got in hand as of right now. In view of this, I think the Civitan Club has got an announcement that they would like to make at this time."
"There are some other pledges, let me add, that will be added to this, but I thought that the Civitan Club, as you all know, pledged early in the campaign to give $1,000 towards the purchase of the male giraffe. And I think they have an additional announcement."
"Okay. Due to the interest in this project statewide, and our initial pledge of a thousand dollars, apparently is going to make this first giraffe certainly a reality. So, we have come forth with an additional gift of $1,000. And that's which that is what we would like to make right now is this additional gift of $1,000 besides our initial pledge of $1,000, which will make the Civitan providing $2,000 for the two giraffes."
