War Eagle, Arkansas [Movie]
After nearly seven years of production, the film War Eagle, Arkansas was released in 2007 to critical acclaim but mainly regional interest. The film is set in the community of War Eagle (although whether in Benton County or Madison County is not specified) and focuses on a young man considering leaving his struggling small town, which would mean moving away from his family and friends.
Luke Grimes stars as Enoch, a high school baseball standout with a speech impairment, and Dan McCabe stars as Enoch’s best friend Wheels, so nicknamed because his cerebral palsy causes him to use a wheelchair. While Luke stutters and is socially inept, Wheels is loquacious and profane, so that the two inseparable friends complement each other. As Enoch ponders a baseball scholarship to a Tennessee college, he negotiates relationships with his coach/grandfather Pops (played by Brian Dennehy) and with a new girlfriend, whom he courts with Wheels’s help. The boys’ mothers are portrayed by Mare Winningham and Mary Kay Place, and James McDaniel plays the owner of the video store where Enoch works.
The story is based on the real-life friendship of producer Vincent Insalaco’s son, Vincent III, with wheelchair-bound Tim Ballamy as they grew up together in North Little Rock (Pulaski County). Insalaco originally envisioned the film to be set in North Little Rock on War Eagle Drive. But he and script writer Graham Gordy, a Conway (Faulkner County) native, decided to move the setting to the Ozarks, filming in Eureka Springs (Carroll County) and its environs.
Critics applauded the film, and it received rewards from the Breckinridge Festival of Film, the Savannah Film Festival, Red Rock Film Festival, and Tupelo Film Festival. Philip Martin of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reviewed the film as “an example of tough-minded, well-executed independent filmmaking” and “a damn good movie.” The film did poorly in theatres, however, and grossed only $124,000, while having cost over one million dollars to produce.
