In 1867, Professor Isaac A. Clarke opened a school in Berryville (Carroll County) named Clarkes Academy. The school attracted students from all over the United States, but, after five years, the school suffered a serious setback when the building completely burned. The school was temporarily relocated until a new building, shown here, was constructed. At this location, Clarke educated both male and female students for the next thirty-eight years.
