January 27, 1805

William Dunbar and Dr. George Hunter’s expedition of the Ouachita River and nearby hot springs for Thomas Jefferson returned to Natchez, Mississippi, to begin work on the first reports about the territory of the Louisiana Purchase to reach Thomas Jefferson. The Hunter-Dunbar expedition provided Americans with the first scientific study of the varied landscapes as well as the animal and plant life of early southern Arkansas and northern Louisiana.
